About Sahitya Akademi Award

Sahitya Akademi Award in Bodo Language

The Sahitya Akademi Award, established on March 12, 1954, by the Government of India, is a literary honor conferred annually since 1954 by Sahitya Akademi, India’s National Academy of Letters. It recognizes exceptional writers in 24 recognized Indian languages, including English. The Akademi functions autonomously, and thefirst awards were presented in 1955.

The Sahitya Akademi grants 24 awards for original literary works and an equal number for translations between Indian languages. It is considered the second-highest literary accolade in India, following the Jnanpith Award.

Sahitya Akademi Award Monetary Prize

The award money started at Rs. 5,000, then to Rs. 10,000 in 1983, Rs. 25,000 in 1988, Rs. 40,000 in 2001, Rs. 50,000 in 2003, and finally to Rs. 1,00,000 in 2009.

Other Awards of Sahitya Akademi

1. Bhasha Samman Award: The Bhasha Samman Award was introduced by the Sahitya Akademi in 1996 with the purpose of recognizing and encouraging literary creativity and academic research in the numerous non-recognized languages and dialects of India. The award includes a plaque and a monetary prize.

2. Prize for Translation: The Sahitya Akademi Translation Prizes were instituted to recognize and encourage outstanding translations of literary works from 1989 into the 24 languages recognized by the Akademi. The Translation award includes monetary prize which carried Rs.10,000 in 1989, Rs.15,000 in 2001, Rs.20,000 from 2003, and currently Rs.50,000 from 2009.

3. Bal Sahitya Puraskar: The Bal Sahitya Puraskar was instituted in 2010 to recognize and support writers who make valuation contributions to children’s literature in India. The award includes monetary prize Rs. 50,000 and an engraved copper plaque.

4. Yuva Puraskar: The Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar was instituted in 2011 to recognize and support young writers under 35. It aims to encourage and promoted young writers. The award include cash prize of Rs. 50,000 and an engraved copper plaque.

Bhasha Samman Award in Bodo

Only Sri Madhu Ram Boro has been awarded the Bhasha Samman, in 2002.
