Manas National Park: First National Park in Bodoland

Manas National Park is the first national park in Bodoland, located in the Chirang and Baksa districts of Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR). Manas was declared a national park in 1990 by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.

Manas NP park holds the titles of being a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985, a project Tiger Reserve (among the first nine tiger reserves to be notified in the country in 1973), an Elephant Reserve, and a Biosphere Reserve. It is famous for the Endangered Indian One Horned Rhinoceros, Indian Tiger, Asiatic Wild Water Buffalo, Indian Elephants, Golden Langur, and Pygmy Hog,

Note: In the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) of Assam, there has been a new addition of National Park – Sikhna Jwhwlao National Park (3rd in Bodoland, and 8th in Assam), and the other two are Manas National Park (first), and Raimona National Park (second).

Manas National Park falls in the Chirang and Baksa districts of Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).

National Park Zones

The national park is divided into four ranges and they are:

  1. Western Range: Panbari
  2. Central Range: Bansbari
  3. Eastern Range: Bhuyanpara
  4. 1st Addition: Kuklung

Manas History

Manas National Park

The area derives its name from the Manas River, a major tributary of the Brahmaputra River that flows through the park.

Initially proposed as a Reserved Forest in 1905, Manas officially gained Reserve Forest status in 1907. It was later designated as a Game Sanctuary in 1928, and by 1950 became a Wildlife Sanctuary, covering a total area of 360 km² (140 sq mi). I t was further declared a Project Tiger Reserve in 1973, with an area of 2837 sq.km.

Manas Wildlife Sanctuary was recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in December 1985. Eventually, it became a Biosphere Reserve in 1989 and was uplifted to Manas National Park in 1990 by including Kahitama Reserved Forests, Kokilabari Reserved Forests, and Panbari Reserved Forests. In 2003, it was declared as Chirang-Ripu Elephant Reserve under Project Elephant.

Manas Climate

The minimum temperature at Manas Tiger Reserve averages around 10 °C (59 °F), while the maximum temperature is around 37 °C (99 °F).
