The Jawaharalal Nehru Vidyalaya Assam
Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs) in Assam is part of a national network of schools established under the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS), an organization under the Ministry of Education, Government of India.
JNV is a system of central schools for students mainly from rural areas in India, targeting socially and economically backward students who lack access to learning due to financial, social and rural disadvantages. As per the government policy, one JNV was to be established in each district of the country.
The Aim of JNV
Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas aim to:
- Provide modern and holistic education to talented rural students free of cost.
- Foster cultural and linguistic unity by admitting students from diverse regions.
- Encourage innovation and a spirit of exploration among young minds.
JNV Admission
JNV offer admission primarily to students in Class VI, with limited lateral entry opportunities for Classes IX and XI. Admission is based on a selection test conducted by the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti.
For Class VI Admission
- Age Limit: The student must be between 9 and 13 years old as of May 31 of the admission year.
- Educational Background: Must be studying in Class V in a recognized school or government-approved school in the district where the JNV is located.
- Rural Quota: At least 75% of seats are reserved for students from rural areas.
- Reservation: Reserved seats for SC, ST, OBC, and differently-abled students as per government norms.
For Lateral Entry (Class IX and XI)
- Class IX:
- Admission is based on a written Lateral Entry Selection Test.
- Students must have passed Class VIII from a recognized school.
- Class XI:
- Admission is based on merit in Class X board exams.

The recent Union Cabinet led by honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi has decided to boost the education system by establishing 6 new JNV schools in Sonitpur, Charaideo, Hojai, Majuli, and South districts.
