Kokrajhar Government College has officially been transformed into Kokrajhar University. This new institution will become the second university in the entire Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), following Bodoland University. The Assam Legislative Assembly approved the bill for this change on February 26, 2024, in accordance with the guidelines of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

KGC To Kokrajhar University
On February 26, 2024, the KGC was officially upgraded to “Kokrajhar University” through the enactment of the Kokrajhar University Act, 2024. This decision has been under consideration since 2021.
The Act aims to establish a teaching and research-oriented university that is also an affiliating and semi-residential institution. Additionally, it includes provisions for the establishment of open and distance learning (ODL) facilities. Furthermore, the Act specifies that all of the college’s property, land, buildings, and liquid assets will be transferred to Kokrajhar University, effective from the date of its commencement.

About KGC
KGC, established in 1959, is the oldest college in the Kokrajhar district. It is a government-run institution that offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in various fields like arts and science, as well as certificate courses. KGC also has an IGNOU study centre, wherein students can take different IGNOU courses via KGC.
Kokrajhar University
The KGC has officially transitioned to Kokrajhar University with the enactment of the Kokrajhar University Act, 2024, marking a significant advancement for the institution. The Act establishes a teaching and research-oriented university that serves as both an affiliating and semi-residential institution, and it includes provisions for open and distance learning (ODL) facilities. The new university will be located in Harinaguri, Kokrajhar.
KU Administrative Building Foundation Stone
The journey of KU officially began with the laying of the foundation stone of the Administrative Building on January 28, 2025. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma laid the foundation in the presence of CEM Shri Pramod Boro, Cabinet Minister Shri Urkhao Gwra Brahma, and other distinguished dignitaries.
