Karimganj Renamed as Sribhumi District | A Historic Move in Assam

Karimganj Renamed as Sribhumi District: The Assam government has decided to rename the existing Karimganj district as the Sribhumi district during the state cabinet meeting held on Nov 19, 2024.

The change reflects the historical and cultural significance of the region, as inspired by Rabindranath Tagore, who referred to it as “Sribhumi” over a century ago. The term translates to “the land of Maa Lakshmi,” symbolizing prosperity and blessings.

Assam Chief Minister has tweeted on X Platfom “Over a 100 years ago, Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore had described modern day Karimganj District in Assam as ‘Sribhumi’- the land of Maa Lakshmi. Today the #AssamCabinet has fulfilled this long standing demand of our people.”

Karimganj district, under the division of Barak Valley, covers a total area of 1,809 sq. Km, established on 14 July 1983, curved out from the Cachar district and has now been renamed the Sribhumi District. This renaming fulfils a long-standing demand of the local community. It aligns with Assam’s broader effort to honour its heritage.

In the Cabinet Meeting, the Assam government also announced that it is considering renaming several districts’ names of the state into modern Assamese names, which don’t have a communal angle. You can watch the Assam Cabinet Meeting Decisions at the link below.

The people of Karimganj have come together in celebration as the government has decided to rename the district Sreebhumi.

“Glad to see the celebration in Sribhumi district. Its erstwhile name-Karimganj, had no reasonance with either Assamese or Bengali sentiments. Sribhumi is a fitting tribute to the region’s ancient Sanskriti.” Assam Chief Minister has tweeted on X Platfom.
