He received his pre-primary education at home with a private tutor named Birnarayan Mech, because there was no school nearby. Later, he attended Tipkai primary school and then Puthimari M.V. School. However, when his father passed away while he was in fifth grade, Kalicharan had to return home despite his desire to continue his education. He took on the responsibility of managing the household and eventually became a timber merchant like his father.

Kalicharan, at the age 18, married Kwmsrhi and had two daughters, Dondi and Nilini. However, earlier in Bodo society, having a son was highly valued as sons would inherit property and carry on the family name. In order to have a son, Kalicharan married Upashi Brahma. Fortunately, they had three sons and two daughters.
