Bodo Medium Day 2024 Celebration: May 18 holds great importance and carries historical day for the Bodo community because on 18 May 1963, the Boro medium was officially introduced as a medium of instruction in schools across Assam by Chief Minister Bimala Prasad Chaliha. Ever since, the Bodo community observes 18 May every year as “Boro Bijwng San.”
Bodo Medium Day History
Bodo people couldn’t learn in their own language even after India gained independence. They had to study either Assamese or Bengali language. So, the Bodo intellectuals realized it was important to protect and promote the Bodo language just like Assamese and Bengali.
Understanding the education was vital for their community’s progress and language, after a very long struggle and efforts of the Bodo Sahitya Sabha (BSS), the Bodo language was established as a medium of instruction at primary level in 1963 and later at secondary level in 1968.
In 2004, the Bodo language was officially introduced as an associate language of Assam state.
Bodo Medium Day, called Boro Bijwng San in the Bodo language, is celebrated in different parts of Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) and other areas in Assam with Bodo population.
61st Bodo Medium Day
On May 18th, 2024, the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR)) will observe Bodo Bijwng San, marking the 61st Bodo Medium Day. This will be observed in all educational institutions, government, and semi-government offices under the BTC Departments.
