Bodo Farmer Sarbeswar Basumatary receives Padma Shri Award

Shri Sarbeswar Basumatary, a 61-year-old farmer from Panbari village in Chirang District, Assam, was recently conferred with the country’s fourth highest civilian award ‘Padma Shri’ in appreciation of his contributions in the field of Agriculture.

The award was presented to him by President of India Droupadi Murmu at a ceremony held in New Delhi on 22 April 2024.

Currently, Sarbeswar Basumatary is serving as the member of Advisory Board of Fishery Department of Chirang District, Assam.

According to the PIB report, Shri Sarbeswar Basumatary purchased land in 1995-96 and later attended agricultural training at the Bijni Sub-Divisional Agriculture Office. With guidance from the office, he successfully implemented various schemes as the President of the Panbari Banana Growers’ Society. He cultivated bananas, oranges, and pineapples with satisfactory production.

Shri. Basumatary has achieved notable recognition throughout his career, including the ‘Award of Excellence in Sericulture’ from the Ministry of Textiles, Central Silk Board in Bengaluru in 2015, the ‘Assam Gaurav’ award by the Assam government in 2022-23 and the Best Farmer Award from Assam Agriculture University in 2022.

Alongside Basumatary, Shri Drona Bhuyan in the field of art category were distinguished individual from Assam to receive the Padma Shri award on Monday.
