Assam By Election 2024 Schedule: The Election Commission of India announced on 15 Oct 2024 that the by-election on five Assam seats would be held on 13 Nov, for which results will be out on 23 Nov 2024. These Assembly seats had fallen vacant after MLAs representing them were elected in the last Lok Sabha election in 2024 as MPs. Voting will be held on:
- Dholai LAC in Cachar (SC reserved).
- Sidli LAC in Chirang (ST reserved).
- Bongaigaon LAC in Bongaigaon.
- Behali LAC in Sonitpur.
- Samaguri LAC in Nagaon.

Bye Election, also known as the by-poll, is an election held to fill the available vacant seats; in the upcoming Assam by-election, a new Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) of the particular constituency will be chosen. It is generally held when the former member resigns or dies.
Model Code of Conduct implemented on five seats of Assam
As soon as the date of elections was announced, the code of conduct came into force on these Assam five MLA seats immediately. With the imposition of the code of conduct, no inauguration, launch or announcement of any government scheme will be possible on these seats. Let us tell you that the government will not be able to make any such announcement that may influence the voters on these seats. Hence, there will be a ban on new government work.
By-elections are to be held on these seats of Assam
5 MLAs are now MPs. Out of these, five seats have fallen vacant due to MLAs becoming MPs. With the announcement of by-elections on five assembly seats of Assam, the election stir has intensified in the state.
Voting for by-elections on all these five assembly seats of Assam will be held in one phase on 13 November 2024, While the results will be declared on 23 November 2024.
- Cachar’s Dholai assembly seat, BJP MLA Parimal Suklabaidya, has become the MP from Silchar constituency (SC).
- Chirang’s Sidli assembly seat, UPPL MLA Jayanta Basumatary, has become the MP from Kokrajhar constituency (ST).
- Bongaigaon assembly seat, AGP MLA Phani Bhusan Choudhury has become the Barpeta constituency’s MP.
- Biswanath’s Behali assembly seat, BJP MLA Ranjit Dutta became the Sonitpur constituency’s MP.
- Nagaon’s Samaguri assembly seat, Congress MLA Rakibul Hussain, has become MP from the Dhubri constituency.
Parimal Suklabaidya’s victory led in Dholai by-election
In the 2021 Assam Assembly elections, BJP MLA Parimal Suklabaidya won from Dholai assembly seat for the fourth time. In the 2024 Lok Sabha election, Parimal Suklabaidya won from Silchar Lok Sabha seat reserved from the SC category.
Jayanta Basumatary’s victory led in Sidli by-election
Jayanta Basumatary won from Sidli assembly seat in the year 2021 Assam Assembly election. This time Jayanta Basumatary has been elected from the Kokrajhar Lok Sabha seat reserved from the ST category.
Phani Bhusan Choudhury’s victory led in Bongaigaon by-election
In the 2021 Assam Assembly elections, AGP MLA Phani Bhusan Choudhury won from Bongaigon assembly seat for the eighth/ninth time. In the 2024 Lok Sabha election, Phani Bhusan Choudhury won from Barpeta Lok Sabha seat.
Ranjit Dutta’s victory led in Behali by-election
In the 2021 Assam Assembly elections, BJP MLA Ranjit Dutta won from Behali Assembly seat. Ranjit Dutta won from the Sonitpur Lok Sabha seat in this year’s Lok Sabha election.
Rakibul Hussain’s victory led in Samaguri by-election
In the 2021 Assam Assembly elections, Congress MLA Rakibul Hussain won from Samaguri Assembly seat for the fifth time. Rakibul Hussain won from the Dhubri Lok Sabha seat in this year’s Lok Sabha election.
