GI Tags to Bodo Traditional Items: The Government of India has awarded Geographical Indications (GI) Tags to 21 traditional items from the Bodo community in Assam.

On the auspicious occasion of Bodofa UN Brahma‘s birth anniversary on March 31, 2024, 13 GI tags were granted. Additionally, eight new GI tags were awarded on October 2, 2024. This official recognition will increase the visibility of these products in the market and help preserve their unique characteristics.

1. Bodo Dokhona

Bodo Dokhona received the Geographical Indication Tag in 2024 with the Application Number 956. Dohona is the traditional dress for Bodo women. It is an one-piece garment that looks like a two-piece outfit when worn.

2. Bodo Eri Silk

Bodo Eri Silk received the Geographical Indication Tag in 2024 with the Application Number 960. The Bodo Indigenous people in Assam, India introduced the practice of raising, and weaving Eri Silkworms. This type of silk comes from the Samia Cynthia Ricini or Philosomia Ricini moth.

3. Bodo Jwmgra

Bodo Jwmgra or Fashra or Pali or Rege-Regang received the Geographical Indication Tag in 2024 with the Application Number 961. It is a long scarf worn by Bodo women alongwith Dokhona.

4. Bodo Gamsa

Bodo Gamsa received the Geographical Indication Tag in 2024 with the Application Number 962. It is a traditional attire of Bodo Men. Gamsa is worn by tying it around the waist. It covers from the waist to the knee length.

5. Bodo Keradapini

Bodo Keradapini received the Geographical Indication Tag in 2024 with the Application Number 963. It is a small leafy vegetable that grows almost stemless.

6. Bodo Khardwi

Bodo Khardwi received the Geographical Indication Tag in 2024 with the Application Number 975. It is a liquid similar to soda made by filtering ash powder produced from burning dried banana stems, bamboo, coconut coirs, or potato plants. It is a key ingredient in some traditional Bodo cuisines.

7. Bodo Gongar Dunjia

Bodo Gongar Dunjia received the Geographical Indication Tag in 2024 with the Application Number 971. It is a leafy green vegetable similar to coriander mainly used for seasoning foods, but it has a stronger aroma and flavor.

8. Bodo Serja

Bodo Serja received the Geographical Indication Tag in 2024 with the Application Number 973. It is a traditional musical instrument crafted from Alstonia scholaris and Jackfruit wood used by the Bodo people. Serja has four strings for playing.

9. Bodo Sifung

Bodo Sifung (long bamboo flute) received the Geographical Indication Tag in 2024 with the Application Number 974. It is a traditional musical instrument made from Owajlaw (Bambusa pallida) and Owathare (Bambusa assamica) used by the Bodo people. Sifung has five playing holes and one blowing hole.

10. Bodo Thorkha

Bodo Thorkha, also known as the bamboo clapper received the Geographical Indication Tag in 2024 with the Application Number 965. It is a traditional musical instrument made from Bambusa tulda used by the Bodo community. Thorkha is crafted by splitting a bamboo in half lengthwise and played by grasping it with both hands.

11. Bodo Gongona

Bodo Gongana received the Geographical Indication Tag in 2024 with the Application Number 977. It is a traditional wind instrument made from bamboo (Bambusa assamica) mostly played by the Bodo women. Gongona has a flat shape with a single internode.

12. Bodo Jotha

Bodo jotha which is called cymbal in English received the Geographical Indication Tag in 2024 with the Application Number 978. It is a musical instrument made up of two basin-shaped pieces that are hit together to create sound.

13. Bodo Kham

Bodo Kham (drum) received the Geographical Indication Tag in 2024 with the Application Number 972. It is a traditional musical instrument of the Bodo community in Assam. Kham is made from the wood of trees like Alstonia scholaris, Jackfruit, Mango, or Sterculia villosa.

Validity of Gi Tag

The Geographical Indication in India is valid for up to 10 years from the date of the registration, and it can be renewed; if the gi tag is not renewed, the name of the product will be removed from the registration list.
