The Martyrs Day of ABSU (All Bodo Students Union) is observerd every year on 12 June at the various locations in the districts of Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) and across the Assam state. This year marks the 37th Bodoland Martyrs’ Day, commemorating the death anniversary of Sujit Narzary, the first martyr of the Bodoland Movement. On this day, ABSU raises flag and honors Sujit Narzary with floral tributes.
Martyr Sujit Narzary lost his life on 12 June 1987, at the age of 15 years and 5 months, during the Bodoland Movement led by Bodofa Upendranath Brahma.
What is Bodoland Movement?
In 1987, Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma, the former president of ABSU, led the Bodoland Movement with the objective of creating a separate Bodoland statehood within the Indian constitution. This movement eventually resulted in the signing of three Bodo Peace Accords:
- First Bodo Accord: BAC accord (Bodoland Autonomous Council) in 1993
- Second Bodo Accord: BTC accord (Bodoland Terriorial Council) in 2003
- Third Bodo Accord: BTR accord (Bodoland Territorial Ref\gion) in 2020
